The world I know is flooded. You don't go in the water. You don't touch it. If you do, it will get you, drag you down, and you're gone.

Harry Iskinder knows the rules. Don'ttouch the water, or it will pull you under. Conserve food, becausethere's no arable land. Use Sundered slaves gently, or they die tooquickly to be worthwhile.

The Sundered create food. The Sundered create shelter. They're also dying out - and when they go extinct, so will humanity.

Faced with dual extinction, Harry searches for a cure, but time is short... and every truth he knows is compromised.

There is no time for salvation. In this broken, flooded world, hope has a price.

There are movies you watch, works of art you see, poems and books you readthat you walk away from going "whoa." This was one of them forme.Complete gut-punch-powerful ending that reminded me of the experience of walking away from the big reveal in Ender's Game.

The world is very well developed and a mix of Post apocalyptic, Tolkien, and anime. This book is the first in the Among the Mythos series, which isto take place over 15000 years. An ambitious undertaking for an authorbut after reading this book, I believe Ruthanne Reid is as capable asanyone.

The Sundered eBook Ruthanne Reid

I wasn't expecting this. [book:The Sundered|15728393] was one of the best Apocalyptic Sci-Fi novels I've read in a long time.

Earth's water has turned black and flooded everything. [This doesn't obviously seem to be a "global warming" novel. Not "Cli-Fi". That's a good thing.]

If you go into the black water, it pulls you under and you die. There's very little land to grow food on. There's very little land period. Cities are built on what little land there is.

In the black water live creatures called "The Sundered". They provide food, keep things working, heal and repair.

Harry comes from a line of people who maintain a map that provides clues to the Hope of Humanity, something that gives humans control over the Sundered.

Good story and plot. Good characters. This is a book I'll re-read.

The Sundered eBook Ruthanne Reid Reviews

I loved this story right from the start! Not very many novels grab me like this one did, nor keep me intrigued throughout, always wanting to pick it up again and find out what's going to happen next.

Despite what a few other reviewers have said, I LOVED the main character's internal dialog, every bit of it! I didn't find it too childish at all. I mean, have you talked to a 19-year-old lately? The author did a great job of showing both his maturity at trying to be a leader and his insecurity at being so young--a well rounded character! Thank you, RuthAnne, for providing me with some real enjoyment. Oh, and I loved the ending.

The only thing I would have changed is removing all the "adult" material. I would have loved sharing this story with my pre-teens, but because of that, I can't. Everything else about it would have made it a great read for them, and I know they would have loved it.

P.S. I'm a professional editor by trade, and I've done a lot of book reviews and previews. Yes, this book had quite a few typos, especially near the end, but the overall story more than made up for that. RuthAnne, don't let anyone belittle you for self-publishing. I'm glad you did.
SPOLIER ALERT!

From the moment Harry claimed Aakesh I instinctively knew he was more than just a tier 1. Still after not having read a sci-fi novel for at least 40 years since the Dune Trilogy, this was sort of a reintroduction, and left me wondering why.'' There seems to be some description missing on several levels, and this may have to do with being further developed in the series mentioned.'' What is interesting is the twist on how good overcomes evil, and that it is the human element that is evil and not the “aliens.” Even when Aakesh insists that the water was never blue, it is almost taken for granted that the Sundered Ones are the invaders and have changed Earth.

I was really feeling sorry for Harry as he seemed on the verge of loosing it all. I was a bit confused at the end when the hold or HOPE was shut down as to just how it all took place. I likely will have to read through that again, as everything happened so fast I was left as confused as Harry!'' I really enjoyed the story, and it’s likely I’ll be looking for the next one Ruthanne!
Gotta say that this was a weird book. It raised - ultimately - more questions than it answered. Not sure of this was done on purpose for a sequel, or if the author found sadistic pleasure in toying with me.
The book is written in the fairly simplistic tone of a pre-adult boy. But all these fascinating questions - what caused humans to become so simple. Why is black water evil? Are the creatures with those weird eldrich powers really subservient? How did both species evolve? Why is the apparent brainless sundered creature apparently so important? What does he/she/it represent?
Anyway - all those questions still aren't answered, even though the thoughts they come up at random moments a week after the book was finished.
And ignore those reviewers who complain about character formation and sentence structure and other nit pics. The questions raised are just too fascinating to care about the small stuff.
And I really hate the implication of the ending - even though it's fair.
This book blew me away.

I had had this book in my for a little while and decided on a whim to go ahead and start it. Unfortunately for my family, I wasn't able to put the back down for the next two days until I finished this enthralling book.

Told from the perspective of a 19 year old boy, this book is gripping from the first word to the last. The author uses humor as an effective device to present some darker subjects without the book becoming overly weighty.

It is hard to explain what the book is about without giving away any of the juicy little tidbits that the author strews throughout the book enticing you on from one page to the next, so I will only say that if you love a good science fiction / fantasy page turner, this is the book for you!

I especially appreciated the ending. Some years ago, I rented a DVD copy of the Butterfly Effect and unknowingly watched a version with an alternate ending that wasn't shown in theaters. Come to find out, the ending that I watched had been the original ending, but it hadn't done well in front of screening focus groups. I have always been disappointed by that - that people wanted a happy ending rather than the ending that actually fit the dark and disturbing story. This story did not disappoint. There is a happy ending, but it is not necessarily the happy ending that those original Butterfly Effect focus group attendees would appreciate.

Can't wait to see what this author produces next!
