4·5 stars, almost 5 stars

This book was almost a 5 star read for me. ThisClose! The Irishman was a delightful read... although my emotions were all over the place at various places in the book.

Enough twists to keep me guessing and keep me reading. It's been a while since a book has captured my attention and I've been excited to continue reading without skipping pages :)

The Good:
Strong, sweet and determined hero
Lovely heroine (strong in her own way too)
Endearing secondary characters
Satisfying epilogue.. I do LOVE a good epilogue!

The Bad:
Nothing comes to mind right now..

The Irishman edition by Wynema McGowan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've read many, many books and NONE have touched me as much as this book. It had been recommended to me and the person was so right. You WILL NEVER forget the story.
Once starting THE IRISHMAN you won't be able to put it down. The characters are so real you find yourself drawn into the story like a magnet to steel. I was sorry when I'd finished the book.
A sweet story with twists and turns that keep you reading. While the ending was somewhat predictable, it was still an enjoyable book.
Good story for the time period and place. I didn't like the ending to much, I felt like it was rushed after Sean came home, I would have liked an explanation and reunion with his wife, otherwise a good story.
From the other reviews, I gave this author a chance. The prologue was interesting enough. It went downhill for me when Sean, who seems a likeable sort, arrives at the farm in the hopes that he can get to know this beautiful, silver haired woman he saw at the train station. Mae Ella, while I could sympathize with the situation with her demented mother, was somehow immature and unlikeable. She's got a baby (that seems to live in his crib), her husband is newly dead, her father just died, she's left to care of her demented and seemingly bedridden mother and a half-blind Uncle. Lots of potential for here for a well written story. Unfortunately, there are no smooth transitions. We go from Sean showing up to look for work while she's trying to feed her mom (and having a crazy conversation) to doing laundry then having super magically being ready (a veritable feast for these impoverished people that includes dessert). She checks on baby, puts baby back in crib and spruces herself up to gawk lustfully at Sean when she takes him his food and realizing that he's attractive for an "older man". I just couldn't keep going after Chapter 4.
I can picture Mae Ella dealing with life’s trials and Sean’s way of wooing her ... it was so realistic- i laughed with them and cried with them . Wish there was a sequel
Good book! Interesting and a definite page turner. There was humor, mystery, great characters, great descriptions. The reader got a glimpse of Sean's thoughts as he tried to win Mae's heart, and some of those thoughts were laugh out loud funny.

Mae desperately tried keeping herself together during some very trying times. If the husband's shocking revelations weren't enough to do her in, the problems at her parents home would have destroyed a lesser woman. I don't want to say too much more and reveal anything.

The author did an excellent job, in my opinion, approaching two difficult subjects in a light historical romance Peter's story and Mae's mother's dementia. I found this in historical romance and this is definitely not your typical story for the genre. A very nice change of pace.
